I was immediately impressed and knew I wanted to work for that company! One thing led to another and I landed a summer internship and, well, the rest is history. Eight years later and I’m still here! (No longer the summer intern, thankfully!)"

Best event / favorite Planning Factory memory: I loved being a part of the Live 8 Concert in Philadelphia back in 2005. Planning Factory had the opportunity to decorate the VIP tents for the entertainers/musicians. It was the best/craziest/longest few days in the scorching summer heat, but it was an absolutely incredible experience to have been a part of!

Thing you're most looking forward to about 2012: I’m looking forward to celebrating Planning Factory’s 30^th Anniversary this year. You’ll have to stay tuned to see what we plan on doing to celebrate later this year!

Airline Rule Changes

In case you have missed the news... the US Dept. of Transportation has tightened some rules for airlines, making it easier to understand airline fees and pricing.

The rules, which go into effect Thursday, make it easier to figure out how much plane tickets actually cost:
- All taxes and fees must be a part of the advertised price.
-All baggage fees and other surcharges must be disclosed up front.

Other changes taking effect:
- All passengers must be notified of delays of 30+ minutes, diversions, and cancellations.
- Price increases after purchase are forbidden. (Really? Can you believe they could legally do this before?)
- Reservations can be held for 24 hours without payment, or passengers can cancel with a full refund within the first 24 hours.

Lewes Polar Bear Plunge

Hey PFI Fans! Was one of your New Year's Resolutions to get more involved with charities, philanthrophy, or are you just feeling generous? If so, we have a worthy cause for you!

One of PFI's friends and supporters, Ralph Cetrulo, sits on the board of the Delaware Special Olympics. As a part of their fundraising, every year he takes part in the Lewes Polar Bear Plunge. This year's goal is 25k! Last year, he was able to far surpass his goal and convince his wife to join the plunge. If he reaches his goal this year, his whole staff will join him!

For more information, see Ralph's fundraising website. Any donors of $1,000 or more will be invited to a steak dinner at Sullivan's Steak House in February.

He's almost there! Anything you can spare would be greatly appreciated by all!

EVE 2012 sure is coming up fast!

Today is the LAST day for several of our hotel discounts. Some run until Friday, but book now, to ensure you get the hotel of your choice! The packages are, of course, listed at EVE Wilmington.

Ticket prices are going up on Saturday to $152/pp. You can still purchase tickets online, but we will also be at the Chase Center on Friday and Saturday for ticket sales and pickup!

If you got a new iPhone 4S for the holidays, you've probably spent a lot of time playing around with Siri. As you've probably noticed, there are a lot of fun questions (and wacky answers) that can be pulled up. Such as, "What is the Meaning of Life?"

Of course, Google does the same thing with its' Easter Eggs. Try typing in "What is the meaning of life, the universe, and everything" into the Google search bar and hit "I'm feeling lucky." (hint: Google instant has to be turned off.)

We especially like the bit about charitable donations... not only is it wonderful to help those less fortunate, but it also appears the writer took some ideas from this year's holiday episode of Glee! (Substitute "pig" for "goat" and you've got Finn's gift to Rachel!)

That Ring Thing

Sweet Treats

Planning Factory is gearing up for our holiday party / potluck in two weeks... and that means baking for some of our elves!

Chooch, a beloved member of the PFI family (and uncle of a current staffer!) brings amazing dishes from his mother's recipe collection each year. Here's one to share:

Gertrude's Christmas Cookies:

1 cup butter
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup white sugar
1 cup butter, softened
2 eggs
2 cups sifted all - purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp vanilla
½ tsp salt
2 cups quick oats
2 cups rice cereal
1 cup yellow raisins

Directions:

Cream butter and sugars until fluffy, add eggs and vanilla. Beat well. Sift together flour, salt and soda. Add to cream mixture and mix well. Add oats, cereal and raisins, blend well. Drop by tsp. onto greased cookie sheet 2” apart. Bake in preheated 350 degree oven 12 to 15 minutes.

Holiday Goodies

It's December... and rumors are swirling around the office about cookies, potlucks, and such.

Thanks to Cher's generosity, PFI got off easy this year and didn't have to bake any sweets for Thanksgiving. Our good friend, Chef Dana (of Desserts by Dana) made us some wonderful pumpkin cake and sweet potato pie.

Here's a new recipe we're just dying to try: White-Chocolate Cherry Shortbread.

Oh, fonts. How we love you. You fancy up a boring old paper like nobody else. You add personal flare to invitations and advertisements. If only we didn't have to choose between Times New Roman, Ariel, Verdana, and Courier, just like everyone else.

Oh, wait...

MyFonts has the word's largest collection of typefaces, all for your personal use. (For a small fee, of course!) Like fonts that imitate handwriting? Search that category. Prefer to see example text in Shakespeare quote? Done. Find a font somewhere, and what to know what it is? Upload an image and get an answer!

Even if you don't have specific design needs, their website is always fun to browse. Since it is Movember, our current favorite is Mr. Moustache.

While browsing online for invitations for EVE2012, we found an Etsy site, J & Paper, with a cool new concept.

Instead of having finalized invitations mailed to you, J & Paper creates a digital file with your card design (choose from standard designs or have one custom made!) and sends it via e-mail. Then you can print your own invites, or have a local shop do the printing for you. Of course, if you ask nicely (and for an extra fee), they'll print the invitations for you.

What a great way to have customized invites at a DIY price!

PFI's Weekend

As always, PFI is on the move this weekend. The big event? A Roaring 20s-themed Wine & Music Festival at Dover Downs.

Looking forward to sharing some decor photos next week... we pulled out all the glam-stops, with fishnets, feather boas, derby hats, and more!

We just might have to start our weekend off with a Classic (Prohibition Era) Cocktail to bask in the theme.

We're Back...

The PFI Team had an extremely busy fall/winter, forcing them to put their blogging temporarily on-hold. Well, we're back and ready to kick spring into high gear and keep our followers up to date on all that's going on with Planning Factory International and Planning Factory Bermuda!

Here's a brief update:

December 2010:
The PFI team produced an INCREDIBLE New Year's Eve event with the Chase Center on the Riverfront. EVE 2011, Wilmington's PREMIER New Year's Eve Party was the hottest ticket in town. Be sure to Save the Date for EVE 2012 - Saturday, December 31, 2011!

January 2011:
January was chock-full of repeat clients. From a Greek-themed retirement event to a private dinner at the DuPont Country Club, we were busy working with several PFI favorites!

February 2011:
We LOVE working with the students at a local private high school. Together we produced two fantastic winter ball events! Despite getting hit was stormy winter weather and a change of date, we were able to throw two spectacular evenings! Additionally, we welcomed a first-time Law School client into our February routine. Working to achieve their fundraising goals and objectives, we produced a stellar event!

March 2011:
Did you catch the PFI team at the Dover Downs Bridal Show on Sunday, March 20, 2011? We taught (3) Event Classes focusing on Logistics, Budget and Current Design & Color Trends. The day was extremely successful and allowed us to mingle with hundreds of brides - the phones haven't stopped ringing for wedding decor! Our seasonal-themed tablescapes were a huge hit! On the Bermuda front, we produced a spectacular grand opening event for an on-island client. This evening reception allowed the client to showcase their new office space, while featuring the progress and successes they've made over the last three years. Kudos to a wonderful client!

We're back!!!

The Planning Factory Team has been WILD this last month. Where did July go? We can't complain, as it's been an extremely busy summer, but it has taken us off-line from regular posts to the PFI Blog.

So... with that said - here's a brief recap of July 2010:

The first week of July blew in with a huge event in Bermuda - the Bacardi Limited Annual General Meeting. The program was fantastic and the venue selected was simply stunning. If you haven't yet stayed at Tucker's Point Hotel & Spa, please do check it out!

Upon our return, we executed two events, back to back, on the same day - one at Penn's Landing in Philadelphia (Global Fusion) and one in South Jersey (Motorsports - Babes Burning Rubber). Both events, although produced on a 100+ degree, were executed flawlessly with extremely happy clients.

Immediately following our July 17, 2010 craziness, two fantastic events for Today Media Inc. were upon us: the Best of Delaware Party and the Best of the Main Line Party. PFI worked closely with the Today Media team to produce upscale, chic lounges for both events, as well as providing logistical suggestions for the layout of the event, entertainment suggestions and color stories.

Finally, the month came to an end with a beautiful wedding held at the DuPont Country Club over the weekend. Splashes of Silver and Lavender graced the multiple tablescapes in the ballroom while the beautiful bride and groom danced the night away. Cheers!

Recently back from a very large program in Bermuda. Kate beasted it (as always) keeping the Hotel in check and detailing every rooming need. Great job!

We had an AWESOME Mixologist dazzling guests at the "main event", along with a Cigar Roller & famous DJ! It was wonderful!

This weekend we're in Philly on one event and NJ on another! PHEW....we keep rolling!

BOXES ON JET BLU ARE A NO-NO

So how many times DID I fly out of JFK with boxes in tow? Many. I go to the counter this past Sunday for my flight to Bermuda with two small boxes, which are gifts--thank God for once it wasn't necessities for an event!

Jet Blu no longer allows you to fly with boxes as carry on OR to check them in! So a word to the wise: if you are thinking you can ship some boxes with you on Jet Blu as you fly to your next event, FORGET ABOUT IT! Items have to be in luggage or bags, but not boxes. They now consider them CARGO.

Fortunately, my bag was big enough, and yes, I used every inch of every pocket!

Great Design Article in the NY Times...

I love a good re-post, especially if someone didn't catch it the first time around.

This is a great article about a fairly new website called Lonny. It was created by two former employees (editor and photographer) of Domino Magazine - a great interior design magazine that closed in May 2009.

They decided to create an online magazine, with true pages to turn, zoomable photos, etc for the design community to enjoy, after losing so many inspiring publications (Domino, Blueprint and Home & Garden).

FAVORITE RECIPES FOR JULY 4 PICNICS!

RICOTTA CHEESE PUFFS

1 lb. ricotta cheese
3 eggs, slightly beaten
3 heaping tablespoons granulated sugar
4 teaspoons baking powder
1 cup sifted flour
1/2 tsp. salt
Oil for deep frying (yep, you are actually frying!)
Confectioner's sugar (YUM!)

Mix ricotta, eggs, granulated sugar and baking powder and let stand one hour. Then add flour and salt and beat until smooth. Drop batter by teaspoonfuls (these make nice, mouth-size puffs) into oil heated to 350 degrees and brown lightly. Remove with slotted spoon to drain and dust with Confectioner's sugar. Eat WARM!

I'm not sure how many it makes because that part of the recipe has been lost for years! But the above is all you need to make everyone declare Ricotta Cheese Puffs as a new favorite!

OR TRY:

4th OF JULY POUND CAKE

If you are ambitious on the same day, you can move on to this one:

Buy a pound cake (you might want to after making the Ricotta Cheese Puffs because you may not want an assembly line in your kitchen like I do when it comes to baking; we refer to this as the "baking frenzy");
Slice cake lengthwise so that you make (3) total "layers";
Mix a combination of Ricotta Cheese , about a small container, (see why these recipes are good made together?) and a container of Cool Whip;
Fill the layers with this mixture and add freshly sliced strawberries and blueberries on top of each layer;
Assemble for a beautiful and impressive presentation that is easy to do and YUM!
You can even add small American Flags to put it over the top.

BEWARE CALLS CLAIMING 'MANDATORY POSTING' OF CERTAIN POSTERS!

I love when this happens (lol); I received a phone call from a company claiming to be advising me of "mandatory posters" related to health care that I HAD to post, and of course, buy. Here's what I was told: "You MUST post HIPPA ($32,95); HEALTH CARE REFORM ($19.95); something called the PPAC Act ($44.95) or you are NOT IN COMPLIANCE."

My red flag went up as soon as pressure was applied. I responded that I would first check with my accountant, health care broker and possibly my lawyer.

So after doing the appropriate asking around, guess what I found?? Not only are the posters NOT mandatory, some of the information I got was that the pros in these fields have not heard of some of them and therefore the need for posting. And then this: these are available for printing, FREE, on line.

No kidding. And of course I just had to call back the person who called me to say, "nice try."

So be a part of my generation and QUESTION EVERYTHING. That philosophy can serve you well and always, always, stir the pot.
